In honor of APTA’s Centennial year, the WVPTA is celebrating its own history by highlighting those who have significantly contributed to our mission and growth as a state chapter. This month we are privileged to highlight Sandy Burkart. Sandy Burkart PT, PhD, OCS, was a long-standing resident of West Virginia before moving to Boca Raton, Florida. He has served the physical therapy profession for over 50 years in numerous ways. Most notably, he is a past Chairperson of the West Virginia University Division of Physical Therapy and the second President of the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy (formally Orthopaedic Section, APTA). He has been a long-standing supporter of physical therapy education at both the entry-level and post-professional levels. His clinical practice has focused on integrating orthopedics and neurologic concepts into a functional, movement-based approach to physical therapy. In the early years, Dr. Burkart was instrumental in bolstering the West Virginia Chapter as well as many other Chapters by providing affordable, high-quality continuing education.
